History Live is a three day festival celebrating and showcasing Scotland’s rich and diverse history and cultural heritage in the heartland of Scotland’s historic past and takes place on Friday 29th September until Sunday 1st October.
The opening concert celebrates all that is extraordinary within Scotland’s rich heritage, with music through the ages, connected by the thread of history. We are lucky to be able to showcase the talents of Scotland’s finest youth orchestra, conducted by the vivacious and exceptionally talented Ross Gunning. Our concert will also feature music from Scotland’s foremost classical composer, John Maxwell Geddes, as well as a couple of fun and surprising guest appearances.
The concert will take place in the Church of the Holy Rude, the second oldest building in Stirling after the castle. Founded in 1129 during the reign of David I (1124 – 1153) as the parish church of Stirling. In 1567 the infant King James VI was crowned here, and today this beautiful building is still a significant and living church, telling the story of a proud 800 year existence.
To celebrate the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, the organisers will be taking over the city and surrounding area with a festival that’s jam packed with events, activities and workshops which will bring our Scottish history to life.
The weekend kicks off on Friday 29th September with a concert in the Church of the Holy Rude in Stirling, a performance of ‘Coal’ at the Macrobert and a talk at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
On Saturday and Sunday, take a walk through history on one of the guided walking tours, discover secrets you never knew existed, visit observatories, hidden theatres, jails, hospitals and castles. Have a shot at bowling on one of the oldest bowling greens in the world.

Stirling Castle will host both ‘CSI Stirling’ and ‘Renaissance Revelry’. There will be tastings and talks at Argyll’s Lodging,and a tour of Cambuskenneth Abbey, including the tower which is usually closed to the public. Bannockburn House will also be open to the public for a very rare tour.
Also in the programme are music workshops, essay writing workshops, events at the Old Town Jail, tours of the Old Town Cemetery and events at The National Wallace Monument.
