Comrie lies on the banks of the River Earn and is situated within the heart of the scenic West Strathearn area of Perthshire, with the Scottish Highlands rising to the north. Some great attractions to visit include Auchingarrich Wildlife Park, the Comrie Croft Farm Shop and Comrie Croft Bikes, Melville’s Monument, the Earthquake House and Senses Spa. Auchingarrich Wildlife Park
If looking for a fun place to visit with kids, why not check out Auchingarrich Wildlife Park. The wildlife park has been operated by the Scott family for over 11 years. The full-time keepers of the park – Maxine and Shona – have devoted their time to taking care of the animal’s health and welfare. There are plenty of fun activities to keep your little ones entertained as there are 40 different species of animals – all with their own certain charm. It’s the perfect place to learn about different species of animals. Additionally, there are also exciting activities such as the indoor play barn, mini golf that is located in the picnic field and also the play park which has a flying fox, giant net swings, a seesaw sandpit and climbing frames. The Auchingarrich Wildlife Park is the perfect place to spend the day as there is also the Torlum Coffee shop which can offer snacks and meals throughout the day!
Earthquake House
If wanting to soak in some of Comrie’s history with earthquakes, the Earthquake House is the perfect place to do so. Historically, Comrie has experienced frequent earthquakes according to UK standards. Comrie became the site of one of the world’s first seismometers in 1840 and a functional replica is still housed in the ‘Earthquake House’ in The Ross in Comrie. The Earthquake house is a small pyramid roofed building that was erected around 1874 to provide a location for a seismoscope. A seismoscope is a device that used for registering that an earthquake shock has taken place, but which does not record the time of the event. The Earthquake House is known as the first ever purpose-build earthquake observatory. The device installed replaced various other instruments used since 1840 to try and record the earthquakes that occurred in the area. This is what led to Comrie being nicknamed the ‘Shaky Toon.’ Today, there is a modern seismograph that is operating inside the building, which provides a fuller explanation behind the science and history of the site.
The White Church and Melville’s Monument
Other amazing landmarks to visit include The White Church and Melville’s Monument. The White Church is one of Comrie’s most iconic landmarks and is situated on a prominent site, adjacent to the River Earn. The White Church is a beautiful, white-harled building and was built back in 1805. The White Church is a great landmark to visit as it is considered a bright and lively community! With over 50 different types of community groups, The White Church hosts various fundraising and social events!
The Melville Monument is a 72 – foot tall granite stone pillar that is situated a mile north of Comrie at the west side of Glen Lednock. The iconic landmark can be enjoyed during your sight-seeing adventures and if wanting to spend more time in nature!
Comrie Croft Farm Shop
If on the hunt for locally sourced produce, why not visit the Comrie Croft Farm Shop. The farm shop has an amazing array of tasty local and organic produce alongside handcrafted tools and gifts, traditional kids toys and camping equipment. The farm shop ensures that they are well stocked with seasonal fruits, vegetables and flowers, which are grown and handpicked through using organic methods. If in the mood for other delicious food items, John at Wild Hearth Bakery offers delicious artisan sour dough bread and pastries, Carroglen Farm offers fresh lamb meat and why not try the local Perthshire honey!
Comrie Croft Bikes
