Those hilltops look magical covered in snow, but all magic comes with a price. After long days spent hiking or exploring in sub-zero temperatures, there is nothing better than a warm, comforting meal. The modern, fully equipped kitchens in our cottages can be the perfect staging area for your delicious home cooked meals. Here are our suggestions for the best ways to cater your winter holiday.
Seasonal Produce
Nothing makes a great meal like fresh seasonal produce. Root vegetables, chestnuts and walnuts are at their peak this month, perfectly accompanying our favourite festive recipes. This is also the best season for monkfish, haddock and mussels, if you are looking for more delicate flavours. If you need more inspiration for your recipes, check out Greener Scotland’s calendar.
Traditional Recipes
Nothing says comfort food like the recipes that our parents and grandparents used to prepare when we were little. If you grew up in the area, just the name of these dishes will be enough to make your mouth water. If you are visiting form outside the country, then you should definitely try these traditional Scottish recipes. Start the day right with a full breakfast – mix and match bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausage (Link or Lorne), baked beans, potato scones and black pudding to create your ideal wake-up meal. Finish it all off with some buttered toast and a hot cup of tea. A long walk around the Trossachs will help you rebuild your appetite, just in time for lunch. Nothing will warm you up like a bowl of steaming, delicious Scotch broth (with some oatcakes on the side of course). And to end the day in the best of ways, a great classic: haggis, neeps n’ tatties to get you to bed on a happy stomach.
