Gleneagles Village and The Long Town of Auchterarder

The town was an important settlement in Strathearn in the medieval period. Auchterarder castle used to stand north of the town in the area now known as Castleton. In the 11th Century it was a hunting retreat for King Malcolm. It was visited by King Edward I in 1296 during the Wars of Independence. There are few remains of the castle after it was ruined in the 18th Century.

The town is most famous nowadays for the nearby Gleneagles Hotel, with its popular golf course and spa, which played host to the 2005 G8 summit. Work on this resort was begun in 1913 by the Caledonian Railway Company and following the first world war there were two 18-hole golf courses on the site. Finally completed in 1924 it was described as “the eighth wonder of the world”. Visit the Gleneagles Spa and Golf courses.
