Among Central Scotland’s hidden gems is the railway walking track that winds its way between the charming villages of St Fillans and Comrie. Stretching approximately eight miles along the former Caledonian Railway line, the walking track it offers a delightful trail through some of Scotland’s most scenic countryside.
Once part of the Crieff Junction Railway, this historic route now provides walkers and cyclists with a peaceful and picturesque path to explore. It’s 18.7 miles in total. 12.2 of these are paved, and 6.5 miles unpaved. The railway was only extended from Comrie to St Fillans as late as 1901.
Starting out
Starting in the picturesque village of St Fillans, you are are greeted with stunning views of Loch Earn and the surrounding mountains. Here you can still see the well preserved old St Fillans station buildings which closed in 1951. From here, the trail follows the gentle contours of the landscape, passing through verdant woodlands and open fields adorned with wildflowers.
The sights
As you make your way along the track, you’ll encounter remnants of the railway’s industrial past, including old bridges, signal posts, and abandoned station platforms. These fascinating relics offer glimpses into the area’s rich history and provide an atmospheric backdrop for the journey.
One of the highlights of the walk is crossing the spectacular Dalchonzie Bridge, which spans the gushing waters of the River Earn. This impressive structure offers breathtaking views of the river below and serves as a picturesque spot to pause and take in the surrounding scenery.

Reaching Comrie
Continuing on, walkers will soon reach the charming village of Comrie, nestled amidst rolling hills and lush farmland.
Here, they can explore the village’s quaint streets, visit local shops and cafes, or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere of a great high street. To extend the walk head north to visit the splendid Deil’s Cauldron. Here you’ll find a cascading waterfall and several pools resembling a boiling cauldron.
