Health and safety guidelines

Using a sauna safely can enhance relaxation and offer health benefits, but it’s important to follow these guidelines to avoid risks:

Before entering the sauna

  1. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before your session to prevent dehydration.
  2. Avoid Alcohol and Heavy Meals: Do not consume alcohol or eat a large meal before using the sauna, as it can increase the risk of overheating or nausea.
  3. Health Conditions: Consult a doctor if you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, respiratory issues, or are pregnant.
  4. Remove Accessories: Take off jewelry, glasses, or metal items that can become hot and cause burns.
  5. Shower: Take a warm shower to clean your skin and prepare your body for the heat.

During Your Sauna Session

  1. Set a Time Limit:
    • Beginners: Start with 5–10 minutes.
    • Regular users: Limit sessions to 15–20 minutes at a time.
  2. Listen to Your Body: Leave the sauna immediately if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unwell.
  3. Sit on a Towel: Use a towel to sit on for hygiene and comfort.
  4. Maintain Proper Position:
    • Recline or sit comfortably to allow for even heat exposure.
    • Avoid standing for long periods to prevent dizziness.
  5. Avoid Overheating: Keep your head at a comfortable temperature, and don’t stay longer than your body can handle.
  6. Limit Conversation: Keep noise low to promote relaxation for yourself and others.

After the Sauna

  1. Cool Down Gradually: Step out and allow your body to cool down slowly. Consider a lukewarm or cool shower to close pores and lower your body temperature.
  2. Rehydrate: Drink water or an electrolyte beverage to replace fluids lost through sweating.
  3. Rest: Give your body time to relax before engaging in strenuous activities.
  4. Avoid Alcohol Post-Session: It can exacerbate dehydration and dizziness.

General Tips

  1. Frequency: Use the sauna 2–3 times per week for beginners and up to daily for experienced users, but avoid back-to-back sessions in one day.
  2. Child Use: Supervise children carefully, as they are more sensitive to heat. Limit their sessions to 5–10 minutes at lower temperatures.
  3. Proper Ventilation: Ensure the sauna is well-ventilated to avoid excessive carbon dioxide build-up.
  4. Temperature Guidelines:
    • Traditional saunas: 70°C–100°C (158°F–212°F).
    • Infrared saunas: Lower temperatures of 48°C–65°C (120°F–150°F).

Avoid If You Are:

  • Pregnant (unless approved by a doctor).
  • Feeling unwell or have a fever.
  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Experiencing dizziness or severe dehydration.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the benefits of a sauna safely and comfortably.
