Happy New Year! We hope this year brings us more joy and opportunities. 2022 is the Year of Stories and this blog is about the old iconic stories. Following the Outlander map and film locations is a great way to immerse yourself in the story. You get to visit iconic historic sights as well as beautiful Highland locations such as Glen Coe. It serves as a great excuse to visit as much from Scotland as possible. Here are a few of the most beautiful locations in Central Scotland:
1. Loch Katrine, Callander
A peaceful loch nearby Callander, which is easy to reach from Stirling, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. There is even a poem about this beautiful loch by Sir Walter Scott’s – “Lady of the Lake”. Except for scenery, the loch offers lovely cycling, walking routes, and cruises through the loch. It is also a popular location for camping, you could also stay in nearby Callander.
2. Drummond Castle Gardens, Perthshire
These beautiful gardens are accessible and dog-friendly, located in scenic Perthshire. They are not open until May this year but you are able to purchase your ticket now! It is a great experience for the entire family and of course, includes a unique story – the Copper Beech planted by Queen Victoria in 1842. Definitely, a must-visit!
3. Deanston Distillery, Doune
The unique distillery was established in the 1960s, alongside River Teith. From local ingredients, the distillery offers visits to the Warehouse and whiskey tastings depending on your level of curiosity. A great location to visit while in Stirling but also, great gifts!
4. Doune Castle
Close to the distillery and Stirling, you can find the historic building of Doune Castle, where some episodes of Game of Thrones have been also filmed. Audio guides are available but most interestingly, there is a fun quiz to learn more about the history of the castle. Currently closed for maintenance but a great location to add to your summer holiday plans.
